Who can submit to eiRxiv

When writing a scientific manuscript, each author and researcher may have different roles and responsibilities. Every journal or preprint also has different rules for who can publish with them and how each author needs to be involved. Make sure you read and understand eiRxiv’s full author eligibility information below before you begin your manuscript.

Student Authors

Because we are a preprint for students, eiRxiv expects students to take the lead in developing the question, doing the research, and writing the manuscript.

  • Students must be at least 13 years old to submit to eiRxiv or be an author on an eiRxiv manuscript. Note: while we wholeheartedly support younger students conducting and sharing their research or using the resources on our site, we limit our submission age to comply with U.S. COPPA regulations.

  • Students must be pre-university; in other words, they cannot have started a program that will lead to a post-secondary degree (e.g., a Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree).

  • The parents/guardians of all student authors must give consent for the manuscript to be posted on eiRxiv.

To comply with laws to protect minors online, such as Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States, we require an adult (the “Coordinating Adult”) to submit the manuscript on behalf of the student authors. The coordinating adult will:

    • Submit the manuscript in the eiRxiv platform on behalf of all authors.
  •
    • Coordinate the collection of all submission materials, including any revisions as requested.
  •
    • Manage all communications with eiRxiv on behalf of all manuscript authors.
  •
    • May serve as an adult author on the manuscript.
  •
    • Undergraduate students cannot serve as coordinating adults.

  • If you’re a Coordinating Adult, read these tips to help support your student during the submission process.

All eiRxiv manuscripts must have at least one adult author listed,  even if the student did all of the work themselves. eiRxiv does not allow students to submit on their own, nor do we post manuscripts with a single author.

  • The adult author can be a scientist, mentor, or teacher who oversaw the research.
  • Undergraduate students cannot be the sole or supervising adult author.
  • If the research was done at home, the student’s parent/guardian can be the adult author.
  • At least one adult author must work with the coordinating adult to mentor the student authors as they make any manuscript changes our editors request during prereview.
  • The adult author must also give their consent for the manuscript to be published.
  • The adult author may also serve as the coordinating adult on a manuscript.

Per ICMJE guidelines, additional student and adult authors should also be listed if they helped significantly with:

  • Coming up with the research idea, designing the experiment, collecting the data, and/or analyzing the data, AND
  • Writing or revising the manuscript in a way that critically impacted the intellectual content of the manuscript

All individuals who meet these conditions must be listed as authors on the manuscript. All authors must also approve of the final manuscript, give consent for it to be posted, and take responsibility for resolving any issues related to the accuracy or integrity of the research.

On the other hand, contributors who don’t meet these conditions should not be listed as authors. You can instead list them in the acknowledgements.

If any individual who meets these requirements does not want to be an author, they must document this in writing. Our editors may ask for this documentation.
