Our Story

Why eiRxiv Matters

Around the world, students are asking new scientific questions, testing hypotheses, and making discoveries. Sometimes, they get to share their work with their classmates and communities through projects, presentations, and science fairs. However, very few students get recognition for their work or receive advice on how to improve their research beyond the classroom. Even when their discoveries could change the world, students also often face steep barriers to challenging in traditional academic journals.

Anchored in the belief that students deserve the same opportunities as adult scientists, we initially set out to open traditional peer-reviewed scientific publishing to students by founding the Journal of Emerging Investigators in 2011. Even as more and more students published with JEI, however, not all students had the mentoring or resources to complete the lengthy  peer-reviewed publication journey.

Over the last few years, preprint servers – online platforms where scientists post their research to get community feedback before publishing – have become more and more popular. When scientists post their research manuscripts online as “preprints”, sharing new discoveries and getting feedback from other scientists becomes faster and easier.

And we began to imagine –
if adult scientists can publish their preprints,
why not students too?

eiRxiv bridges this gap by providing a free preprint platform designed specifically for students to rapidly share their work and get professional scientific feedback.

At eiRxiv, students can:

  • Share their research with the world.
  • Get constructive scientific feedback to make their research even stronger.
  • Build confidence as researchers and understand how science communication works.

With eiRxiv, every student can find their scientific voice and be part of the scientific community.
